Brian Kubecki's, I Need You, is a show completely dependent on something for its success – you. Experience a jaw-shattering reexamination of visual art and be a part of something you won't soon forget. Isolation; Something To Die For, new work by Travis Phillips, deals with human intentionality and interplay by combining historical references with contemporary issues. Also featured this month will be selected works by Delurk collective members Chad Beroth, Patrick Harris, Jennifer O'Kelly, Will Safrit, Molly Simpson, Zac Trainor and Dane Walters. "Not Far From The Tree" at Delurk Gallery

The current show at Delurk Gallery features artwork by Don Beroth, Jill Bush, Patsy Harris, Tim Walters, Ed Simpson, Anne Safrit, and Sarah Whittington.  Delurk artists' moms and dads have contributed nearly 80 works as diverse as their offspring, from fine furniture to intuitive landscapes, from abstraction to realism.  The show runs through January 26th.

Delurk Gallery is located at 207 West 6th Street, in the building that stands at the corner of 6th and Trade Streets.

    Once upon a time, "what-are-you-doing-New-Year's" demanded a definitive answer.  But it's not so important anymore. No plans are necessary; we'll find out when we get there.

First Friday Gallery Hop is November 2nd....

First Friday Gallery Hop is coming up....Gallery Hop is a monthly event organized by the Downtown Art District Association (DADA).  The November Hop often promises wonderful shows and exhibitions, not to mention a vast array of very giftable art and craft in the various shops and galleries all around the Art District.  This month's edition will no doubt live up to the hype. Unleashed Art Center is an AFAS group event, teaching and exhibition space. AFAS also has a beautiful gallery at 606 N. Trade Street, the Red Dog Gallery. Plus, AFAS is the driving force behind the Arts on Sunday Festivals, which just completed another successful series. AFAS = Art For Art's Sake.  The Delurk Gallery will have an opening November 2 from 7pm-10pm. Our Featured Artist this month will be our own Clark Whittington celebrating fifteen years of his famed international art project Art-o-mat. The Art-o-mat project, based here in Winston Salem, NC, has reclaimed the old cigarette vending machines of yore and repurposed them to bring international art and artists to people all over the world. The Art-o-mat project brings together Whittington's brilliant creative design, inspired artwork and love of both the arts and artists to a perfect union. This is a celebration of both him and his glorious project. The show will include machines, memorabilia and artwork from artists who have contributed to the project over the last 15 years. Sunday FUNday

FOREVER YOUNG 

...is the theme for the upcoming Arts on Sunday Festival on Trade Street (500-600 blocks).

Entertainment will be provided by the R.J. Reynolds High School Performing and Visual Arts groups.

This is always a fun, well attended event. R.J. Reynolds has a long tradition of excellence in art and music education, and the Arts District is the ideal venue to showcase their talents.  The streets will be lined with artists, craftspeople, and other vendors, and many of the shops and galleries will be open. There will be a special kids' craft area too.

Bring your friends, your family, and your dog.  And don't leave home without your wallet, as this is the perfect opportunity to do some holiday shopping.  The weather forecast is most favorable, so plan for a fun afternoon. 

The past Sunday featured some outstanding musical performances.  Big Ron Hunter with Robby Carr started  the day off with some of Ron's classic blues tunes.  They were followed by some of the finest Dixieland Jazz this side of New Orleans, as performed by a traveling U.S. Air Force musical ensemble called the Heritage Ramblers.  A traditional bluegrass band finished off the afternoon. The Old Bunch of Keys Band featured 5-part vocal harmonies and kick-up-your-heels banjo picking that made some flatfooters very happy indeed.

Piedmont Craftsmen' How2Night

Thursday, October 18th ....which is tomorrow!!!! They have great demo in store for you!  Jelaina Frelitz from Yay! Snacks Bakery will be here for the "Art of the Yeast Roll". She will be demonstrating how to make yeast rolls and talk about her bakery as well. Her yummy treats will be displayed on platters by PCI artists. The event is tomorrow from 6-7 pm. See you there!!!  Piedmont Craftsmen is located at 601 North Trade Street, right at the intersection of 6th and Trade streets. Off-street parking is available.

Well, well. I often tell people that "I don't do food."  I was born with abnormal taste buds.  I don't have a sweet tooth.  I HATED that sugar cube you had to eat in order to get your polio vaccine back in the 60's. And I wouldn't even eat my own birthday cake.  The only thing I can cook expertly is popcorn the way my father did, in a large pan on the stove.
And as a popcorn purist, I don't want anything but popcorn salt on it. No candy gunk, no cheesy stuff, and absolutely no butter, because butter gives me horrible headaches.  Even the smell of butter makes me ill. Which is why I avoid all that microwave stuff. The smell goes all over the place.

But where were we? I get so sidetracked.
Piedmont Craftsmen's How2 Night and Yeast Rolls.  Now the thought of yeast rolls right across the street from me may actually lure me into attending a cooking demonstration.  Will wonders never cease!

BLUES-A-PALOOZA Sunday Oct 7th

The AFAS Group's October 2012 edition of Arts on Sunday Festivals kicks off October 7th with BLUES-A-PALOOZA.  This season's edition features performances by Twin City Buskers, Peter May and Friends, and the Charley Ward Band. 

Arts on Sunday has evolved over the years into a hugely popular and well attended series of afternoon art fairs.  The 500 and 600 blocks of Trade Street, along  with the adjacent 200 block of 6th Street, are blocked off to vehicular traffic.

The streets are lined end-to-end with festival tents and tables displaying an amazing array of art and craft by area artists, many of whom sell their creations in shops and galleries in the Arts District.  Many of the bricks-and-mortar shops and galleries hold special Sunday hours as well.  It's a perfect opportunity to get a head-start on your holiday shopping and to show your support for local shops and artists.

Complementing the visual arts scene are a fun variety of performing artists, including stilt walkers, mime and balancing acts, clowns and balloon artists, and jugglers.  A special kids' booth offers creative activities for young people.

The Electric Moustache is a gallery over at The Werehouse, located on the eastern side of downtown, alongside the railroad tracks at the corner of 3rd Street and Patterson Avenue. 

Opening during the Gallery Hop on Friday, October 5th is a show that includes works by two of the architects associated with Trade Street denizens Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce.

ROCK THE BLOCK

Time to Party Downtown at Rock the Block Remix!

Winston-Salem's annual musical streetfest happens on Saturday, September 22nd, from 11am till 7pm, spanning downtown from Corpening Plaza to Winston Square Park, to the green spot on 4th Street (I think it's got a name, just hasn't found a permanent place in my brain to reside), to 6th Street between Trade and Cherry Streets.

We get to rock 'n' roll to the sounds emanating from the Rock, Country and Blues stage being sponsored by Ziggy's.  This artist is very, very happy that we didn't get the beach music stage dumped on us.....Sorry, apologies to those of you who like "beach music."  If you don't know what that is, don't worry your rock-and-roll heart too much.

"Beach music" owes its heritage to the old 60's R & B music of the Tams, the Drifters, and the like.  It owes its name to the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina, where it got tons and tons of airplay.  And back in the day when everybody's summer vacation included at least one trip to Myrtle Beach, it became the sound track to everybody's vacation. 

Mind you, the stuff that falls into the oldies-but-goodies R & B category is pleasant, nostalgic stuff.  But then somebody went and wrote songs about beach music......"I LUV beach music..." and "Myrtle Beach Days" come to mind here.
The thing is, they've all got the same rhythm, same sound, same dance steps.  The band starts up and it's like a whole bunch of wind-up toys start dancing all the same steps, a dance they call the shag.

How this set of dance steps got called the shag, I'll probably never know.  All I know is that once upon a time back in my younger, more foolish days, I knew these 2 guys from England and I took them to a party that had beach music, and a couple girls started talking about shagging in the sand and there was all kinds of back and forth talk about shagging in the sand along with secret behind-the-back chuckles and winks and grins between our two Englishmen....So what was so funny about dancing the shag?  Finally I decided our guys had had enough fun at the girls' expense, so I  told them: in England, "shagging" is a slang term for having sex.
